Dear Roger, First Past the Post has claimed another scalp. By the time the new Prime Minister is announced, they will be our 5th in 4 years. Today Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister, leaving the Labour Party to decide whether it wants to anoint a new leader or have a leadership contest. The day after the 2024 General Election, psephologists warned that the landslide victory Sir Keir secured was fragile. Winning two-thirds of the seats with 34% of the vote was a hollow victory; it meant that 66% of voters didn’t vote for him. We don’t know who will be the next Prime Minister, but we do know we have to move to a better way of choosing our politicians. Our democracy and our country cannot wait. It is now time for a proportional voting system which encourages long-term planning to tackle the issues that really matter - housing, social care, the cost of living and protecting the environment and nature. |
This moment is a real opportunity - not just to highlight the problems with First Past the Post, but to finally win the change we desperately need. Electoral reform has already emerged as a key issue in debates around Labour’s leadership. More and more politicians are waking up to the fact that the system is broken. Proportional Representation feels more achievable than ever before - but there’s still a way to go, and we’ll need your support every step of the way. Whoever moves into 10 Downing Street must hear the message loud and clear: fixing our democracy is a priority, and it can’t wait. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be working tirelessly to influence Labour leadership debates, briefing the new cabinet and building up grassroots activism in key constituencies. We can't do any of this without your support, so thank you. |
