As the secretariat of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections, we were supporting Alex’s Sobel’s amendment for a National Commission on Electoral Reform. With more than 180 MPs backing it, it gained more support across the House than any other amendment since the general election.
We were disappointed to hear that it was ruled out of scope and would not be heard. However, Proportional Representation was repeatedly brought up by MPs from a range of parties, ensuring it was still part of the debate - and the government had to respond.
The Democracy Minister Florence Eshalomi - who is open about her own support for PR - made the following statement:
“The government's priority is a politics that works for all people in all places - not some people in some places. This is brilliant to hear - but now it’s time to turn words into action. We are calling for Andy Burnham to announce a National Commission that can bring together experts and the public to design a fair, proportional voting system that’s fit for modern Britain. This afternoon, we will be back. We are going straight to 10 Downing Street to personally deliver an open letter to Andy Burnham, signed by tens of thousands of activists. The movement for fair votes is growing, inside and outside of Westminster. We have many more actions planned in the coming weeks and months.
