The Government has just confirmed that Report Stage of The Representation of the People Bill is being delayed until September.

That may sound like a simple Westminster timetable change. But it is MUCH more than that.

It means we have been given a rare and valuable opportunity to fix politics - one we absolutely MUST take.

For months, Open Britain and the Bigger Than Politics campaign have been making one simple argument: our politics must be fair for everyone. Fair votes. Fair influence. Fair information. Fair play.

We told you that when the moment came, we would ask you to stand up and do your bit.

That moment is now.

The Representation of the People Bill is the biggest live opportunity to change the rules of our democracy. It already deals with voting rights, voter registration, political donations, digital campaigning and the powers of the Electoral Commission.

But right now, it does not solve the most important problem - what to do about our disastrous First-Past-The-Post voting system.

That is why we are preparing a major campaign push between now and September. We want this delay to become the moment Parliament finally raises its ambition.

Our first major ask is clear: the incoming Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, should announce a National Commission on Electoral Reform in his first 100 days.

This is not a demand for politicians to impose a new voting system overnight. It is a demand for a serious, independent, time-limited process to let the public and experts examine how votes translate into power, and how we can make our system fairer, stronger and more trusted.

Today, we are launching a new petition calling on Andy Burnham to kick off the National Commission in his first 100 days.

On 28th July we’ll deliver the petition directly to Downing Street. We need thousands of people to sign it, share it and show that the public wants this moment used properly. We need the message that lands on the Prime Minister’s desk to be clear and powerful.

But this is just one thing we are doing.

MPs and peers are already asking for more information on Bigger Than Politics objectives. They want briefings. They want to help their constituents see and understand the importance of this moment. They want as many people as possible to understand what the National Commission would do, how it would work and why it is the responsible next step.

We need to be able to respond to those requests quickly with high quality content.

That means more research. Design. Digital action. Parliamentary briefing. Supporter mobilisation. Press work. Clear explainers. Stronger materials. And a campaign that can keep going all the way to September.
