Dear Roger, It’s a big week for MVM and for Proportional Representation. Yesterday I was in Parliament to brief MPs ahead of the Second Reading of the Representation of the People Bill. What followed was a debate where changes to our elections took centre stage, showing just how far we’ve come in the push to get PR on the agenda. Thanks to the energy and determination of Make Votes Matter supporters, nearly half of the MPs who spoke during the debate raised Proportional Representation and the need for a National Commission on Electoral Reform, including several Labour MPs. Chris Curtis MP, Co-Chair of the Labour Growth Group, put it plainly: “We no longer live in a two-party electoral system, and if we continue to have an electoral system that doesn’t acknowledge that fact, we will have elections that lead to even more chaotic and unpredictable results.” And Procedure Select Committee Chair Cat Smith MP echoed what so many of us at MVM have long believed: that we need a commission “to look at all the different options… to make sure that people feel like their vote counts and there’s no such thing as a wasted vote.” Seeing these ideas firmly in the mainstream debate is a huge step forward, and it’s thanks to the energy and determination of MVM activists like you. |
