Sign our open letter urging Burnham to make proportional representation a priority

Dear Roger,

For the first time ever, we have a Prime Minister who openly backs electoral reform.

That is monumental. But our fight doesn’t stop here.

Now is the time to push harder - to make sure this issue sits at the heart of his government's promise to do politics differently.

We’ve teamed up with Make Votes Matter and Unlock Democracy to urge Andy Burnham to prioritise fixing our democracy.

Will you help us push this over the line?

For years you, and tens of thousands of others, have helped build the biggest wave of support for electoral reform this country has ever seen.

PR was written off as a fringe issue at the top. Yet in 2024, together we helped elect the most pro-PR Parliament in history.

We’ve continued to build on that support ever since: this May, Alex Sobel MP tabled an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill calling for a National Commission on electoral reform.

Thanks to our coalition's work, it’s now won backing from more than a quarter of Labour MPs and just under 200 MPs across all parties – making it the most-signed amendment of the last Parliament.

Andy Burnham has told us he wants change. Now he needs to show us he means it.

There’s something simple he can do right away to set his direction of travel.

In his first 100 days, announce a National Commission on electoral reform.

Bring experts and citizens in to finally build a proportional voting system that makes every vote count, and unlocks lasting, progressive change.

As Andy himself put it:

“There is nothing more unstoppable than an idea whose time has come. And PR’s time has come.”

Andy Burnham has inherited a government with enormous challenges, and endless demands on its time.

If PR is going to rise up that list, it'll be because people like us keep making the case, keep organising, and keep insisting that it matters.

Thank you for all you do,

Clementine,

Campaigns Officer,
