The May local election results in England made two things clear. Firstly, First Past the Post cannot deliver democracy in this era of multi party politics, and secondly, the public are calling on Westminster to make some serious changes. Only 5 councils had a party win the most seats on a majority of votes. The average winning party won 61% of seats on 35% of votes. In 35 councils, the party with the most votes got under 30% of the vote. Since May 7th, our number-crunching team, with the support of the Democracy Club, have worked day and night, gathering the data, calculating the most disproportionate results, and finding the most egregious failures of First Past The Post. All this data points towards a vital piece of work. Later this week we are launching our Postcode Tool to equip you with a ready-to-send letter to your local newspaper editor. This data is also fuelling a vital report that we will push into the hands of MPs and decision makers. Together we can make a noise for PR, and get the message in front of MPs, councillors, and anyone who hasn’t connected the dots yet. |
