Subject: Missing: Action on our broken voting system

Roger,

It’s not a joke, but it reads like one:

The upcoming Elections Bill is ignoring the biggest problem with our elections - the voting.

Rounded Rectangle: Tell the new democracy minister you want change

How many more times will it take?

How many more distorted elections?

How many more leaders without real mandates? How many millions more votes, cast and unrepresented?

How many times does the trust of the people have to be broken before Labour takes action on our voting system?

FPTP is failing our democracy. It rewards division not consensus. Rigidity not renewal. Control not cooperation.

It’s the toxic glue holding together an outdated, centralised system that’s stopping real change from happening.

We’ve seen that change is possible — the Government’s change of the voting system for Mayoral elections proves it. But we need to go further. FPTP must be scrapped for Westminster too.

Alongside the APPG on Fair Elections and our partners fighting for PR, we’re calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform to finally review how we elect MPs — and how we can make every vote count.

The Elections Bill is an opportunity to push for this crucial step.

The APPG for Fair Elections has even published a “ready to go” blueprint for that review.

The Elections Bill is an opportunity for real change. Don’t let this government waste it.

In friendship,

Lena,

Deputy Director
