Life is like music. Both are comprised of many elements that interact with each other, elements like tempo, harmony, rhythm, and melody. Music has its tempo, the speed at which a piece of music is played. Life has its tempo, its pace, from slow to fast and everything in between.

Music has a harmony or the sound produced when two or more notes are played at the same time. Harmonious music is pleasant-sounding, in tune and not discordant. When life is harmonious, it is peaceful, friendly, balanced, and pleasing. In both music and life, we strive for harmony and when everything is balanced, there is great harmony.

Those new to playing an instrument may produce a sound that is disagreeable to our ears, but over time when the instrument or the piece of music is mastered, what is heard is pleasing. It is the same in life. Until we master or get used to something new, there may be moments that feel unpleasant, out of sync, unfriendly, harsh or disagreeable. These feelings pass once we master or get used to whatever is new. However, there are times in our life when things out of our control bring disharmony to us (change can do this to us, especially unwanted or unexpected change) and we have to work harder to overcome that which feels harsh, unpleasant, unbalanced, or unfair.

Music has rhythm, the pattern or placement of sounds. The rhythm has its ups and downs. It is the combination of sounds and speeds, a combination of ups and downs that gives music its depth and breadth and brings out a beautiful melody. It is the same with the rhythm of life. Life has its ups and downs, its comings and goings. And it is the ups and downs, the comings and goings that actually bring balance and beauty to our lives.

Which brings us to melody. The melody of music is the overarching tune created by playing a succession or series of notes. When we hear a song, it is the melody that we would most likely sing or hum. It is the melody, through the way it moves (its contour), its range (the interval between the highest and lowest pitches), and the set of its musical notes (scale), that make things stand out or bring out emotion in the music.

Given her oversensitivity to sound, she chose quieter music. On the treadmill, she listened to bossa nova by Stan Getz, specifically "The Girl from Ipanema". Unable to sit comfortably at the piano, she learned to play guitar on her back.[4] During her recovery, she wrote songs that became part of the self-produced EP Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions.[11] Gardot was reluctant to record her songs at first, stating that they were too private for the public to hear, but relented and allowed her songs to be played on a Philadelphia radio station.[4]

During her time in the hospital she learned how to play the guitar and began writing songs, which were made available as downloads on iTunes and released on Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions in 2005. She began to play these songs at venues in Philadelphia and was noticed by employees of the radio station WXPN, operated by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She was encouraged to send a demo tape to the radio station, and the tape found its way to the Universal Music Group.[3] She released her first album, Worrisome Heart (Verve, 2006), then My One and Only Thrill (Verve 2009), produced by Larry Klein.

Final Fantasy IX was heavily marketed before and after its release. Starting on March 6, 2000[2], months before its July 7 release date, Final Fantasy IX characters were used in a Japanese Coca-Cola commercial produced by Squaresoft (now Square Enix), made in similar style as the game's in-game FMVs where Zidane and his friends chase a Coca-Cola bottle cap through Alexandria. The melody from "Melodies of Life" plays in the beginning of the commercial, and the music for it is included on the Final Fantasy IX: Original Soundtrack.

Just like melodies are unique to specific songs, your own journey is unique to the song of your own life. To embrace your personal experiences and goals and dreams is to embrace the uniqueness of you.

When an artist takes the stage, they allow the audience to momentarily peek into their world. Art is meant to evoke emotion and provide an outlet for the indescribable feelings bubbling inside of us. When I sing along to my favorite songs, I can feel the sentiments that were poured into the track, and I eagerly bask in the sensations.

Perhaps in another life, I am gifted with a beautiful voice and perfect pitch, but unfortunately, that is not my current reality. Nevertheless, I am honored to encounter the musicians and mirror their passion.

Music keeps us alive, providing opportunities for us to share our experiences and relate to one another. Music connects communities and cultures that would otherwise have little in common. Music provides the melody to our existence, comforting and inspiring us in times of need.

The normalcy of music in Nashville has, without meaning to, taken some of the life from it. Hundreds of people write songs for hundreds of other people to sing; thousands of songs are written a day here, most of them to meet a quota or earn a paycheck. Music is mostly a commodity now. And like all commodities, it feels largely impersonal.

Like many children of immigrant parents, KASIA vulnerably admits to a crisis of identity known all too well. Loving, hardworking parents have, by their love and hard work, set a standard which, for the rest of her life, she will be trying to meet. Is she supposed to be as sacrificial as they were? Must she forsake the present for the future, immediate joy for long-term hope? Is she supposed to be great, or happy?

Life in ancient Greece was musical life. Soloists competed onstage for popular accolades, becoming centrepieces for cultural conversation and even leading Plato to recommend that certain forms of music be banned from his ideal society. And the music didn't stop when the audience left the theatre: melody and rhythm were woven into the whole fabric of daily existence for the Greeks. Vocal and instrumental songs were part of religious rituals, dramatic performances, dinner parties, and even military campaigns. Like Detroit in the 1960s or Vienna in the 18th century, Athens in the 400s BC was the hotspot where celebrated artists collaborated and diverse strands of musical tradition converged. The conversations and innovations that unfolded there would lay the groundwork for musical theory and practice in Greece and Rome for centuries to come. In this perfectly pitched introduction, Spencer Klavan explores Greek music's origins, forms, and place in society.

In recent years, state-of-the-art research and digital technology have enabled us to decipher and understand Greek music with unprecedented precision. Yet many readers today cannot access the resources that would enable them to grapple with this richly rewarding subject. Arcane technical details and obscure jargon veil the subject - it is rarely known, for instance, that authentic melodies still survive from antiquity, helping us to imagine the vivid soundscapes of the Classical and Hellenistic eras. Music in Ancient Greece distills the latest discoveries into vivid prose so readers can come to grips with the basics as never before. With the tools in this book, beginners and specialists alike will learn to hear the ancient world afresh and come away with a new, musical perspective on their favourite classical texts.
