Hello Fellow "Classmates",
I am at a severe disadvantage.  Unlike hosptials who are eliminating the librarian, I was hired as the CME Coordinator and Health System Librarian. I am starting from almost zero.  I have at my finger tips, Ebsco Hospital Databases (CINAHL, Medline, Psychology Behavioral Health, Health Business, Cochrane Databases, et. al.), and UpToDate.  Asking for an IPAD at this venture does not sound an option.  I am taking this class to see how I could use mobile in the future.

Any advise is helpful.

Lori,

Our large hospital library doesn’t have iPads either.  Lots of my mobile work is done through my personal device which is an iPhone.  I am not waiting for my institution or my library to eventually consider iPads.  I have been saving here and there to buy an iPad 3 when they come out.  It will be my personal device that I can bring to work.  I will probably use it like I use my iPhone at work, and that is to test how our resources work on the devices and to provide some sort of support when people call.

Hi Lori, small things to consider could be: creating a list of
databases optimized for mobile devices on your library webpage/
hospital intranet, creating a site optimized for smaller screens
(discussed in Week 6), or applying for a NNLM technology funding for
an iPad.

In Week 2 we'll look at mobile apps, where you can at least start
developing a list of mobile resources. Ebscohost provides a mobile
interface for their academic databases (we have CINAHL, Psycinfo,
Medline, etc). All we had to do was enable a setting in Ebsco
Administration. I am not sure if the interface/package for Ebsco
Hospital Databases differs.

Cochrane library is also available as a personal subscription mobile
app from Skyscape for $25-$30.

Uptodate used to only provide mobile access to personal subscriptions,
anyone know if that has changed?

The last time I checked (a couple weeks ago?) UpToDate was still only offering the app for individual subscribers, but our residents have told me that UpToDate works really well on mobile devices through the web.
