Why are Androids called "Google phones"?

Google owns and developed the Android platform http://www.android.com/ . I believe Bart Ragon talked about the rift this caused with Apple when the Android or Google phones first came out. Before then, Apple built hardware and Google software and they were friendly. Afterwards, the lines were blurred.
That's an oversimplification, but hopefully helps (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, folks).
