GOTM, GETM, FABM - VMware virtual machine

Hello - and sorry for cross posting.

On the different mailing lists we quite often experience that people
have problems getting all the pre-requisites in place in order to work
with GOTM, GETM and FABM.

In order to provide an easier way I've created a VMware virtual machine
that contains everything needed to compile and run the standard GOTM and
GETM test cases - as well as a few other utilies that might be handy for
pre- and post-processing. Included is also the FABM source code.

The virtual machine is build using the Mint Linux distribution (Lisa).

To run the virtual machine you need to install VMPlayer (available for
Linux, Windows and Mac).

For now the virtual machine is only available as a simple zip-file. It
can be downloaded from here:
http://www.gotm.net/data_files/mint_lisa-2012-04-05.zip (7 GB) - when
unpacked it'll be a full blown 40GB Linux installation.

Unzip the file in a directory and start VMPlayer and browse to the
directory and select Open.

PS: The virtual machine contains a copy of the Intel Fortran compiler.
This has two implications:
1) I'm not 100% sure if it is legal. If somebody knows better please
inform me - and I'll provide a description on how to install the Fortran
compiler.
2) This vertual machine is only for non-commecial use.

PPS: The gotm-gui and pyncview.py does not work right now. Working on a
solution.

PPPS: I've provided a simple script that will keep all git master
barnches up to date - in the home directory simple do:
. ./update.git

thanks for this which is definitely a good idea. We did the same last
month, based on debian wheezy ;-) so the same machine can be used on our
PCs, laptops of students and a small server.

This is not only the utilities and pre-requisites - it is a full blown
Linux system.

Unfortunately it seems the uploaded zip file does not work as expected.

I would suggest not bundling (or even using) the Intel compiler. This
might be worth consulting:

Especially the line: "Note that academic use of the products does not
qualify for a non-commercial license. Intel offers heavily discounted
licenses to academic developers through our Academic Developer
Program." While I haven't looked at the license, no product of this
nature would normally be redistributable in any case, even if it were
free (as for example Adobe's flash plugin, which actually is free of
charge, but not freely redistributable).

Perhaps use gfortran instead?

Thanks for the advice - that was very valuable - and the solution using
gfortran was obvious :-)

I've now prepared a new virtual machine that works :-) and do not have
ifort included.
