Hello,
Would anybody know where I can download free stock market symbols for
corporations by industry?

I'm looking for some data that will give me all corporations that
trade in "automotive" industry for example. (although I'm looking for
stock symbols for all of them)

Thanks,
Lucas

I tried using Freebase for this a while ago but the data was pretty
incomplete then. Maybe it's better by now.

If you have a bunch of company names but need stock ticker symbols, I
found Google Finance's search interface was the most useful resource
for doing this resolution. That problem requires fuzzy string
matching and the like, and their search seemed to do a decent job at
getting the best company match ranked at position #1. No API though,
at least at the time.

Hi Lucas,
Freebase has decent coverage - we pulled a bunch of industry codes
from the SEC and loaded them along with ticker symbols for a large
number of companies.

Here's a view of the data:

Toby Segaran did a mashup with the data here:

Wow -- this is a *lot* more than a year ago. Well done folks.

Where do I get that data?
I don't seem to find in in:

Thanks.

Hi Lucas,

Here's a link to the query:

The mashup is all in javascript, so you can view source for the code.

Most of the data and the mashup were done by Toby Segaran - toby at
metaweb.com - feel free to follow up with him on the details of the
data.
