On June 2nd I asked about a similar option and have received no
responses.
My question/suggestion was as follows:

"Why not just integrate the character recognition part of gesture
search with the keyboard, say by a longpress of the microphone icon?"
I think this would achieve what you want and much more without needing
to make the interface more complicated.

Graffiti (of Palm fame) is available for Android as an alternate keyboard.
