Hey Guys,
I had previously sent a note personally to Julie, but given the extent of the “reply-alls”, I feel compelled to share my view with the group, albeit possibly controversial.
While the original intention of the fund was and continues to be a scholarship fund so that more young people can enjoy the wonderful enriching summers at Ramah that we all enjoyed, I also am fully of the view that times change, needs change, and situations change. I support giving a portion of the amount in excess of $18k to fixing the Gesher porch under the condition that:
1. This is a non-recurring event; we do not want to be asked every year to give a portion of our fundraising to Joel’s or Camp’s issue de jour. We understand there were terrible storms this year and there is a specific and pressing need, and we want to maintain the condition of our camp. We happen to the have the money already raised and available.
2. The primary goal of this fund is to memorialize Andy and Mike. So that their names and stories are remembered forever. Placing their name on a plaque on a Gesher Porch newly renovated in their memory seems to be to in line with that spirit of memorializing Andy and Mike in an equally tangible way to the scholarship money in their memory. Additionally, we will continue with our continuous commitment to grow this fund going forward and maintain its usage for its originally defined purpose.
3. If we do choose to donate money to fix the Gesher Porch we should a) understand the amount of money needed – is it really $12k or could it be less?, b) ensure that this will include a plaque with Andy and Mike on it, c) make sure its clear that this is a 1 time deviation from the original intention of the destination of the funds
In addition, we clearly are committed to this fund, fully plan to keep fundraising and will raise the money back and more, and hopefully be able to pay a full scholarship out of the interest we accumulate in the not too distant future. We are all older now and many making more money than when we started this fund, and hopefully that means we continue to donate to this fund in larger amounts, enabling us to make back the $12k in less time than it took to build up the first $12k.
Hope everyone’s doing well.

What a long, strange trip this has been for Gesher 2000. You are an amazing edah who has been able to take the loss of two young friends and turn it into a lasting tribute to their memories. You have raised nearly $30,000 which is no small feat. But up until this point, the funds have not been allocated. Now is the time to decide how that $30,000 will be used as you approach the 15th anniversary of your Gesher year at Camp Ramah in the Poconos.
So, what does Camp Ramah need and how can Gesher 2000 make the most impact on Camp with the money raised in memory of Mike Levin and Andy Schloss? In the 2008 letter that you sent out to begin the fund, you wrote, “In honor of Mike and Andy’s love for Camp Ramah, we hope we can count on your help to instill their love in a new generation of children.”
With the goal of instilling the love of a new generation of children in mind, camp needs two things right now:
1. Scholarships to continue to enable any Jewish child who wants to go to Camp Ramah in the Poconos, Ramah Day Camp or Tikvah Family Camp to attend.
2. New flooring in the Gesher bunks and on the Gesher porch to complete the capital improvement project that began last year replacing flooring and roofs of each camper bunk.
Our suggestion would be to create the Gesher 2000 Endowment Fund using $20,000 of the money raised. The principal of this endowment would not be touched and would be added to whenever a donation to the Gesher 2000 fund is made. The yearly interest from the fund would be used to provide a scholarship for a camper in need and a letter would go to the Levin and Schloss families connecting them with the camper each year.
In addition, the $10,000 raised by the Gesher 2000 Fund would be used to help complete our capital improvement by replacing the flooring in all of the Gesher tzrifim and the mirpeset (it looks exactly the same as it did way back in 2000 when you all hung out there), and possibly furnishing the Gesher porch as well. A plaque would be hung memorializing Andy and Mike for all future Gesher edot. This would be completed by summer 2015 and would be a wonderful opportunity for your edah to come up to Camp for the mirpeset dedication and plaque unveiling.
Shabbat Shalom,
Joel and Missy
Thanks Julie for keeping us all informed! This looks very nice. I will put it on the calendar and hopefully be able to come up. All the best to everyone else on this list. This is truly a great way to make our mark on camp, and hopefully we will continue to make impacts down the road, mainly for scholarship money going forward.
Hope to see some or most of you at the annual erev thanksgiving bash!
All the Best,
Lands
