The weather and our humanity

It is cold, very wet, and stormy in Jerusalem with very strong winds. It is warm and cozy in my house. I have to go out soon to a meeting in Jerusalem and later to travel to Tel Aviv - all by public transportation. As I think about how difficult my day will be, I remember the two million people in Gaza who have no real shelter, who are facing this harsh storm with no protection from the wind, the rain, and the cold. Their lives are nothing less than a nightmare, a disaster, and I think about all of the children and the suffering that they are going through. This is not the kind of life that any human being should have to live. If we ever want to live in peace in this land, we must feel empathy for our neighbors. The war is over, or it is supposed to be over. Rebuilding means not only the physical rebuilding, but also the repairing of life - of hearts and minds. That is something that we all must engage in - because the human suffering of Palestinians and Israelis in this conflict must come to an end.
