Planning ahead can help prevent emergencies and reduce risks during extreme winter weather.
Planning ahead can help prevent emergencies and reduce risks during extreme winter weather. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during the height of the storm from Friday evening through Sunday. If travel is unavoidable, dress warmly, drive slowly and allow extra time.
Dress in layers to protect against extreme cold and check on elderly neighbors, relatives and others who may need assistance.
With temperatures expected to drop into the teens and wind chills in the single digits, pets are especially vulnerable.
Pets should be brought indoors during extreme cold.
If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.
Limit outdoor time, especially for pets with short fur.
Consider coats or sweaters for brief walks.
After time outdoors, wipe paws to remove ice, salt and chemicals.
Pets should always have access to fresh, unfrozen water. Avoid metal bowls, which can freeze quickly. Indoors, provide a warm, draft-free space for pets to rest comfortably.
Residents are also reminded to check for stray animals seeking warmth. Before starting a vehicle, tap the hood to ensure no animals are sheltering near the engine.
Cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst. Residents can help prevent damage by taking the following steps:
Set home thermostats above 55 degrees
Drip cold water from faucets, especially those on exterior walls
Open cabinet doors and vanities to allow warm air to circulate
Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as garages and crawl spaces
Locate your water shut-off valve in case of an emergency

Despite the weather, essential City services remain operational. The Germantown Police and Fire Departments continue responding to calls for service. Public Works crews are actively working to improve road conditions as weather allows, and Parks and Grounds crews are ensuring public safety personnel have safe access to City facilities to maintain operations.
