Hello Neighborhood Leaders,

Please share the following important information with your residents.

We understand that severe weather can be stressful, and we want to ensure that residents know exactly when and why Germantown’s weather sirens are activated.

Germantown’s outdoor warning sirens are only activated when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning that includes Germantown in the official warning area. Because tornado warnings are issued in specific geographic areas (called polygons), neighboring communities may have their sirens sounding while Germantown does not, if we are not under the same threat.

What the Sirens Do Not Signal

• Sirens are not activated for severe thunderstorm warnings.
• Sirens are meant for outdoor alerts only and may not be heard indoors.

How to Stay Informed
Since sirens are not designed to be the only warning system, we strongly encourage all residents to sign up for Germantown Alert text alerts to receive emergency notifications directly to their phones. To sign up, visit Germantown-TN.gov/alert and be sure to enable weather alerts. For help signing up, call (901) 757-7200.

Weekly Siren Testing
Weather sirens are tested every Saturday at noon. (However, if there's a chance of severe weather at that time, to prevent confusion, there would be no testing.) 

For the most reliable weather alerts, residents should have multiple sources of information, including weather apps, NOAA weather radios and local news.
