skin allergies in shepherds

My poor shepherd developed severe itching about 6 months after he came
to CA from Germany. Now he is 8 years old and we keep him on a low
dose termaril, has anyone else had this problem? If I want to buy
another dog from Germany, how do i know this won't happen again? It
seems like there would be a lot of "Breeding out" of these problems,
as they are miserable for the dog and owner

What kind of food were you feeding your dog?

Many skin allergies are the result of food allergies. My friend
had a similar issue with her Golden, when she switched to a holistic
dog food(Innova) all these problems were relieved. I have had my GSD
on Innova from Day 1, but since P&G bought them out I have switched
to
Nature's Variety fearing that they will ruin the product line like
they did with Eukanuba. I have heard Blue Buffalo is a great food as
well. I recently went to the beach with my GSD and he loved it and
playe din the salt water. When we came home he was itching like crazy
and thought he was having some kind of reaction to the sand/sun/surf.
It's gone now, but I think it was due to him blowing his winter coat.
