Michael Verhoeven's film combines fact and fiction: its aim is first and foremost to convey information about the resistance group known as "Die weiße Rose" (White Rose), but it also aims to counteract the myth surrounding the Scholls, according to which their fellow students were zealots determined to die and which sometimes even accuses them of political sectarianism. At the Goethe-Institut, Auditorium, 530 Bush Street, Street Level, San Francisco. In German with English subtitles. Suggested donation: $5. |

The Goethe-Institut and Lieder Alive! are delighted to screen Ingmar Bergman's famous 1975 film adaptation of Mozart's "The Magic Flute". Hailed by many as the "finest screen version of an opera ever produced," Ingmar Bergman puts his indelible stamp on Mozart's exquisite opera in this sublime rendering of one of the composer's best-loved works: a celebration of love, forgiveness, and the brotherhood of man. Swedish baritone Håkan Hagegård will be present for an interview with Ruth Felt, Director San Francisco Performances. At the Goethe-Institut, Auditorium and ART-Lounge, 530 Bush Street, Street Level, San Francisco. In Swedish with engl. subtitles. Suggested donation: $5. |
