Calculate field width dynamically for PDF reports

Hi Folks...
I've been trying to find a way to dynamically calculate a field width
for a report depending on its contents and in the number of columns.
It's important for PDF reports which have a limited width (the page one).
What I'm currently doing is to get the length of the content and augment
it by an arbitrary constant, but it doesn't works well all time.
I would also like to be able to warn when a PDF report will have hidden
columns because of its width.
