Dear all,

We are pleased to announce the upcoming Symposium and Author Workshop on Earth System Lawhosted by Wageningen University and Research, Utrecht University, and Colorado College this November 12-13.

This two-day event will bring together scholars and practitioners to critically assess the development of earth system law, identify its real-world applications, and help shape a future research and policy agenda.

  • The symposium on 12 November, hosted at Wageningen University and Research, will examine the state of earth system law as a response to the structural shortcomings of traditional environmental law. It will explore its conceptual evolution, assess its emerging forms and practices, and consider how it might be applied to real-world sustainability challenges. The event will be held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation available.

  • The author workshop on 13 November, hosted at Utrecht University’s Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, will focus on co-developing a perspective paper synthesizing insights from the symposium. This will be an in-person event only, and all participants will be invited as co-authors on the paper intended for publication in a high-impact journal.

We welcome abstract submissions (approx. 250 words) by Monday, 15 September 2025 through the following link: https://forms.gle/Qm82ywtuYTFrHdZp8.

All participation costs will be covered. Participants are kindly asked to arrange their own travel and lodging (limited travel assistance is available for early-career participants).

Further information is available in the attached call for papers. Please contact us if you have any questions.

We hope to see you in Wageningen and Utrecht this November!

Very sincerely,

The Organizing Committee (Louis Kotzé, Rakhyun E. Kim, Mike Angstadt, Işik Girgiç, and Mara Wendebourg)
