NESS 2026: Bridging the Gaps

The 17th Nordic Environmental Social Science (NESS) Conference, hosted by Uppsala University, will take place on 9-11 June 2026. We now call for workshop proposals, until 7 September 2025.

The NESS conferences include a range of plenary sessions, but are particularly characterised by a stream of parallel workshops, focused on in-depth discussions of draft scientific articles. The conference theme is “Bridging the Gaps”. We invite proposals for workshops addressing any of the following gaps, though other questions in a similar spirit are also welcome:

·       How can gaps between environmental goals and implementation be bridged in policy and practice?

·       How can scientific knowledge be more effectively integrated into policymaking, and how can policy needs better inform research?

·       What characterises fruitful interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity – including co-production of knowledge – in science and policy, and how can it be advanced?

·       How can gaps between science and society – and scientists and practitioners – be overcome?

·       How can significant divides among different environmental disciplines be bridged?

The workshops are coordinated by scholars and may cover a range of topics in environmental social science – from local to global level, from theoretical to empirical work, and from policy-relevant to academic discussions. The workshops will give ample time to discuss the submitted papers.

We invite convenors to submit workshop proposals. Each workshop should have 2-3 convenors, ideally including a junior scholar. Convenors are responsible for formulating the proposal, evaluating and selecting abstracts, identifying discussants, distributing papers, and chairing the workshop.

We invite proposals of no more than 2500 characters (including spaces). Proposals should include:

·       The title of the workshop

·       The names and contact information of the convenors

·       A workshop description including background, the link to the conference theme, aims and research questions. You may specify the type of paper you wish to attract, but please note the aim to invite fully drafted papers, not research ideas or half-written texts. The description will be used to call for papers on the theme.

The deadline for submissions is 7 September 2025. A decision on acceptance will be made by the Scientific Committee in September. The call for papers will open in October, and will be based on the submitted descriptions.

Submit your workshop proposal via this form: https://doit.medfarm.uu.se/bin/kurt3/kurt/8888684

If you have any questions, please contact us at ness...@geo.uu.se. See more on the NESS website and NESS LinkedIn page.

On behalf of the Scientific Committee,
