In memoriam Hans Günter Brauch

With great sadness, we would like to inform you that Hans Günter Brauch passed away at the age of 79 last month.

Hans Günter was a leading figure in the scholarship of peace and ecology, having published numerous articles and books on the topic. He was also a visiting professor at various universities in Germany, Thailand, and Malaysia. His publications are cited over 5,000 times, demonstrating the deep impact his work had on many of us.

More than an excellent researcher, Günter was a generous mentor, an active advocate for international exchange, and a genuine supporter of the next generation of scholars. Among the dozens of edited volumes he published, you will find many contributors by Global South scholars and by young experts, for many of which this was an early step towards a successful career.

In his hometown Mosbach, where he lived until the end, he initiated a foundation dedicated to facilitating knowledge on peace and ecology in the Anthropocene. It set up prizes and donated books to schools in the region, and it also initiated an international science prize that has been awarded since 2023. In 2020, he received the German Federal Cross of Merit for his work.
