Dear GEP-ed-ers,

Please help spread the word.

We are seeking applications for a PhD position funded through a NSF-HEGS project. The position will be through the University of Georgia’s Anthropology program. If interested, the student may also apply to UGA’s  ICON Phd program. The selected student will be co-advised by me and Prof. Don Nelson at UGA to examine climate-smart agriculture and farmer adaptation in India. They will also be working closely with Dr. Nathan Cook. This research team integrates a range of social science perspectives, including anthropology, economic theory, political science, and studies of environmental management and social-ecological resilience. The student will be trained as an interdisciplinary social scientist, using diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to study how climate-smart interventions, rural livelihoods, and policies interact, and how these dynamics shape resilience and development outcomes in agricultural communities.

Minimum qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in any social science field (economics, anthropology, geography, political science, or human dimensions of natural resources). They should have strong quantitative skills and demonstrate excellent writing and communication abilities. Knowledge of Hindi is preferred but not essential. Candidates with relevant methodological and theoretical training will be prioritized.

To apply: The application deadline for the Department of Anthropology is December 1, 2024, and applicants are encouraged to contact Drs. Vallury and Nelson earlier to express their interest in the position. Please send a CV with the names of 3 references and a 1-2-page cover letter describing your interest in this project to Sechindra Vallury (sechindr...@uga.edu) and Don Nelson (dne...@uga.edu). The letter may include a brief description of your relevant past experiences as well as some discussion of what interests you about this research.

Best,
Sechindra
