Lessons Learned and the Road to COP30

Sciences Po PSIA and CERI are pleased to collaborate with KU Leuven on this expert roundtable to examine the evolution of international climate negotiations ten years after the landmark Paris Agreement.

As we approach COP30 in Brazil this November, this roundtable brings together leading voices in climate diplomacy to reflect on the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from a decade of implementation, including results from the Horizon Europe project ENSURED on reform potential in global climate governance.

How has the Paris Agreement's architecture evolved in practice? What have been the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs and persistent obstacles? How are emerging economies reshaping negotiation dynamics? And what critical issues will define the agenda at COP30 in Belém?

GUEST SPEAKERS

Paul Watkinson

Independent expert and former negotiator

Former Advisor for International Climate Negotiations, French Ministry for Ecological Transition, and former Chair of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice, who will share insights from France's role in shepherding the Paris Agreement and ongoing multilateral climate efforts.

Katja Biedenkopf

Professor, Leuven International and European Studies (LINES), KU Leuven

Professor of Sustainability Politics at Leuven International and European Studies (LINES) research group of KU Leuven, and senior advisor at Adelphi, who will share insights from the ENSURED project, including on key dynamics in COP negotiations and policy developments in carbon pricing.

Christian Dietz

Researcher, Centre for European Policy Studies

Researcher in the Energy, Resources and Climate Change (ERCC) Unit at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS, Belgium), with experience in sustainability and development consulting, who will share insights from the ENSURED project, including on the state of implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Yamina Saheb

Lecturer and Researcher, PSIA, Sciences Po

Lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on climate mitigation, co-founder of the World Sufficiency Lab, and lecturer at PSIA, who will share critical perspectives on the current state and future of international climate negotiations.

Assistant Professor, CERI, Sciences Po

Her research focuses on climate change adaptation and finance. Co-author of Development Aid and Adaptation to Climate Change (2018), she is currently co-editing a volume on adaptation in small island states. At CERI, she co-organises the “Environment and International Relations” seminar series and teaches “Espace Mondial.” She holds a PhD from ETH Zurich and has held academic positions in Sweden, Belgium, and Germany.
