Dear GEP colleagues,

We are hiring two postdoctoral researchers in the GlobalGoals Project at Utrecht University.

Over the past years, the GlobalGoals Project has studied in detail the impact of the SDGs, at national and international levels. Unfortunately, we haven’t found too many impacts. With the two postdoc positions, we now want to break new ground: Given that the SDGs haven’t had much impact, what can be done better? We look for policy-oriented, transformative research that is charting novel ways for better global governance.

The announcement is here: https://www.uu.nl/organisatie/werken-bij-de-universiteit-utrecht/vacatures/two-postdoctoral-researcher-positions-in-the-field-of-global-sustainability-and-earth-system

Please forward to interested colleagues.

With best regards,

Frank Biermann

APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING

Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book: Global Shifts: Business, Politics, and Deforestation in a Changing World Economy, by MIT Press (Earth System Governance Series).

The book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of international political economy, global environmental politics, and transnational governance. It will particularly appeal those who study the politics and governance of business, supply chains, and sustainability (deforestation).

About the book

What global shifts in markets and power mean for the politics and governance of sustainability.

In recent years, major shifts in global markets from North to South have created a new geography of trade and consumption, particularly in the agricultural sector. How this shift affects the governance of sustainability, and thus the future of the planet, is the pressing topic Philip Schleifer takes up in this book. The processes of twenty-first-century globalization are fundamentally changing the politics and governance of commodity production, Schleifer argues, with profound implications for the environment in the food-producing countries of the Global South.

Where to get it?

With generous support from MIT Library, the book is available open-access on the MIT Press website. The book can also be purchased as a paperback through one of the major book sellers.

Praise

“Theoretically innovative and empirically rich, Global Shifts charts how new configurations of power in the global economy are shaping the politics and governance of major agricultural supply chains, as well as their environmental consequences.” Jennifer Clapp, Canada Research Chair & Professor, School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, University of Waterloo

“Through an innovative political economy lens, Philip Schleifer reveals the far-reaching consequences for tropical deforestation of shifting North-South relations and world agricultural markets. His leading-edge, incisive analysis is essential reading for improving global forest governance.” Peter Dauvergne, Professor of International Relations, University of British Columbia

“Global Shifts is a gem of a book—it brings to life the politics of sustainable markets, highlighting the pitfalls of current zero-deforestation regimes and proposing place-based governance of sustainability as a more inclusive alternative.” Stefano Ponte, Professor of International Political Economy, Copenhagen Business School

I feel very grateful for all the support I received for this project over the years!!!

Very best wishes,

Philip
