Dear colleagues,

I write to share a new publication in World Development (attached). The article analyzes variation in post-disaster rebuilding outcomes in Haiti, and suggests, among other things, that expectations of local community support are associated with more resilient outcomes than NGO/government aid or remittances.

This article comes at a time when natural disasters, foreign aid, and development in Haiti are increasingly salient in academic and policy debates. The lack of opportunities for field research in Haiti and devastating cuts to foreign aid in particular invite nuanced discussion about how to best improve implementation and efficiency while supporting local communities in the wake of disaster. We hope this article provides a first step toward such a discussion and invite colleagues to share their thoughts.

Best wishes,

Tracy, Bill, Debra, Karen, and Alex
