Hi Gepers,

The American environmental writer, Aldo Leopold built a cabin in northern New Mexico (near Taos), and it is now used to host environmental researchers and writers.  The application is easy although the deadline is approaching (February 16, 2026).  See details below and check out the attached.

I’m happy to answer any questions.

One Mission. Three Programs. All Generations.

There is one month left to apply to the 2026 Aldo and Estella Leopold Residency

Deadline for the 2026 Residency season is February 16, 2026.

The Aldo and Estella Leopold Residency provides a space for writers and thinkers to reflect and write about the relevance of Aldo Leopold’s ideas to 21st century cultural and environmental issues.

The Residency, an initiative of the Leopold Writing Program since 2012, includes a stay of one month at the Leopolds' historic Mi Casita in Tres Piedras, New Mexico or a small casita overlooking the Galisteo Basin in Lamy, New Mexico; a stipend; and a community presentation in Taos or Santa Fe.

Residents:

  • Stay for one month during the months of July or November.
  • Receive a stipend to help defray travel and living expenses.
  • Give a public presentation in Taos or Santa Fe.
  • Provide a short contribution to our newsletter at the conclusion of their stay.

The Residency is for writers who are committed to reshaping the cultural story about the relationship between humans and Nature.

Thank you for being a supporter of the Leopold Writing Program. With your help, we can continue to inspire an ethic of caring for our planet by cultivating diverse voices through the spoken and written word.
