Greetings.

Geography education in India is in dire need of reform. The
traditional biases towards geography continues to deter many students
from taking up geography as a career path. Yet, geography is not only
a viable option for a career in India, it is also a vital adjunct to
any field of study and endeavor. A good geography education can open
up many more opportunities for young people to participate effectively
and profitably in the world of ideas.

As you may already be aware, The Indian Institute of Geographical
Studies has been endeavoring to address this situation and contribute
to improving school-level geography education in India. The beginning
was made in Bangalore in 2000 and, against many odds, the effort has
now begun to elicit interest in the education community and among
students.

To grow in exciting new ways and to open up the exciting world of
geography both as a subject of fascinating study and a career path,
TIIGS is embarking upon initiatives to develop groups of teachers who
can bring new and exciting ways of teaching to their colleagues and
students. Further, TIIGS is trying to do this in English and Kannada
(the state language of Karnataka). In the future, other languages are
likely to be taken up by regionally-based efforts.
