Hi everyone,

We've reached SVN rev 980 now - with 977 marking the release of
3.14.5, and
some Wiki updates following.
In the project's download area on GoogleCode there are now three
different
files available:
- a source package (.tar.gz) - you will have to install Ruby yourself
- a Debian/Ubuntu package - the package manager will take care of
dependencies
- a Windows installer - InnoSetup will guide you through the install
process
*There is no MacOSX dmg package yet for a couple of reasons. Stay
tuned.*
Note that there are no .zip files anymore. (Is this a problem for
you?)
For the source package, we have moved to gzipped tarballs.
For Windows there is an installer now - which is using a different
mechanism for the
executable: we had to replace rubyscript2exe with Ocra, and at about
the same time
the decision was made to make use of InnoSetup which allows for proper
software
package management. Please test, and report any problems you
encounter.
There's a well-known issue (214) with Ruby 1.9.x
(Encoding::CompatibilityError
which won't affect you if you use the packaged version) still under
investigation.
For the moment, we recommend to stay at ruby1.8 - 1.8.7 has been
thoroughly tested
with no problems seen.
If you're using ruby1.9 for a reason, and run into the
CompatibilityError,
simply re-running GeoToad (using cached files then) usually cures the
problem.
We're still trying to understand what's happening - since other Ruby
projects
have reported similar things, it might be a more general problem.
After release is before release though, meaning that GeoToad
development
will not stop at this stage (there's a lot of new stuff waiting for
more testing!).
Note that the "Work in progress" page will stay frozen for a while
now.
There is a development version (3.15.0) on GC - you'll have to look
more closely since
it's not ready yet for the general public, but feedback is very
appreciated on this one as well!
Now back to real work, take care,
S
