Hello everyone:-
This is the first GeoToad release for some time that doesn't react to a site update - which means that the previous version will stay operational. Feel free to keep the old trusted version, or to update to an enhanced new one!
Almost exactly one year after the 2010-12-22
gc.com site update which broke "early" filtering by D/T/size, there's now
GeoToad 3.14.7 which re-introduces this feature. It took a while to understand how the images are encoded, and some more time to make sure the algorithm used wouldn't change once more (as it did in early 2011).
Should it break again, there's now a "-X" option which restores the 3.14.6 behaviour. There's a little pitfall left which couldn't be avoided, and even though the chance to hit it is very small, I'd like to advise not to run a query close to
midnight UTC as that's the time when the whole image encoding scheme changes - there's an individual "key" for every day-of-month.
The file aging mechanism (which usually replaces files in the cache tree after some pre-defined time) already takes care of this, meaning that cached searches (
nearest.aspx files) are automatically replaced after midnight UTC. (This doesn't affect
userqueries!)
A few minor show-stoppers (non-printable characters would confuse a GPSr, and unusual time formats caused c:geo to not display found dates) have been fixed.
With the new
-L option, and
country and state queries re-activated, you now have a powerful tool to find out about recently published geocaches in your local region, e.g.
geotoad -u ... -p ... -x list -o Berlin-newest.list -L 2 -q state 137
you'll get a list containing the newest 40 caches in Berlin, Germany!
(See the README file or Wiki page for suggestions how to find out your state or country numerical ID.)There are still a couple of new features in the queue, being tested in the
development version (which has been bumped to
3.15.2).
You may easily find out about the new stuff by checking the Issues page for "Started" statuses.
By adding your "star" you may show (kind of "popularity" meter) that the issue would be important for you to be included into an upcoming stable release. Should you run into problems with the devel version please give your feedback directly by e-mail, don't spam the Issues. Thanks.
Wishing you, and your families, and your geocaching mates,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
