Asai Man Piyabanna (Sinhala: ආසයි ම පියඹන්න) is a 2007 Sri Lankan Sinhala musical romantic film directed by Udayakantha Warnasuriya and produced by Dhammika Siriwardana for Alankulama Films.[1] It stars Roshan Ranawana and Pooja Umashankar in lead roles along with Sanath Gunathilake and Upeksha Swarnamali.[2] The music is composed by Rohana Weerasinghe.[3]
The film was released in November 2007 and was a major commercial success in Sri Lanka in that year, as well as receiving positive reviews. It is a remake of the 1999 Bollywood film Taal starring Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshay Khanna.[4]
With film stars Puja Umashankar, Roshan Ranawana, Sanath Gunatillake and Hasantha Gunasekere in the main cast it is produced by Dhammika Siriwardena for Alankulama Films. Ranmalee is a young girl living in a remote village and her father is a traditional dancer. Ranmalee too joins him in training children for dancing.
Ranawana started his cinema career with the blockbuster teen romance movie Hiripoda Wassa directed by the Udayakantha Warnasuriya. He still remembers that the character Prageeth is his best stage character as well. In the later year, he won the Presidential Award for the best upcoming actor for his role in Hiripoda Wassa. He became a household name in the Sri Lankan film industry after the success of Hiripoda Wassa and Asai Man Piyambanna with south Indian actress Pooja Umashankar in 2007. This earned him the role of broadband ambassador for Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). His second and third films, Tharaka Mal and Asai Mang Piyabanna, were released in 2007. Then, he acted more than 15 commercial and theoretical films across many genre, particularly as the lead actor. In 2013, he won the award for the most popular actor at Derana Film Awards for the role in the film Sri Siddhartha Gautama.
She says after her film Anjalika was a blockbusterin Sri Lanka she is being flooded with offersfrom filmmakers there. In fact her second film,Asai Mang Piyabanna, has broken all box officerecords in the island nation. She says, however,that her feet are planted firmly in Kollywood.
Pooja Gauthami Umashankar, mononymously known as Pooja, is an Indian-Sri Lankan actress, who has primarily appeared in Tamil films as well as Sinhala, Malayalam. Following a series of successful commercial ventures, Bala's Naan Kadavul saw Pooja's performance as a blind beggar praised by the critics, securing major awards, including the South Filmfare and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. She simultaneously worked in Sinhala cinema and was part of several successful films like Anjalika (2006), Asai Man Piyabanna (2007), Suwanda Denuna Jeewithe (2010) and Kusa Pabha (2012), thus establishing herself as one of the leading actresses of Sinhala cinema.
She became a sensation in Sri Lankan film industry and a household name after the success of Anjalika (2005) and Asai Man Piyambanna (2007). She then on went to appear in several blockbusters in Sinhala cinema and rose to high popularity. Her big budget film Kusa Pabha released in early 2012 and became the highest grosser ever in the history of Sri Lankan film industry. Critics praised Pooja for her role of Pabawathi.
