PhD position: Information extraction, modelling & communication

We are recruiting a PhD researcher within the Christian-Doppler Laboratory GEOHUM, a collaborative research lab with Doctors without Borders MSF at the Department of Geoinformatics, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg.


Topics for your PhD:

  • Integrate AI-based methods and data fusion techniques (radar and optical) for geographical information extraction (building damages, settlement footprints, road infrastructure, flood extent, land use change etc.)
  • Develop a space-time data model to structure EO-derived information in humanitarian applications
  • Evaluate methods for assessing and communicating uncertainty in information delivery
  • Apply best practice principles in open science and reproducibility

 

Your profile:

  • MSc degree in geoinformatics, remote sensing, geography, computer science or related disciplines
  • Experience in optical and radar analysis
  • Familiarity with deep learning techniques
  • Solid programming skills (Python, R)
  • Enthusiasm in scientific work and publishing
  • Solid communication skills, proficiency in English language

Terms and conditions:

  • Submit your application until 05 June 2024
  • Starting date: 01 October 2024 (latest)
  • PhD position: up to 75% employment (30 hours/week)
  • Initial contract: duration is 24 months, with an option for extension
  • Remuneration according to the Austrian University collective bargaining agreement (full-time gross salary per month min. € 3.578,80 (14 × per year, B1) based on 40 hours per week)
