The Thünen Institute of Forestry in Hamburg-Bergedorf, Germany is hiring a full-time Scientist (f/m/d) in (Geoinformatics, Environmental sciences, or related disciplines such as agricultural or forest sciences) for the research project "Assessment of possible carbon leakage effects of the German Climate Protection Act and evaluation of proposals for their avoidance (Carbon Leak)". The position is currently limited until 31.05.2026.
The objective of the work package "Regional Modeling of LULUCF-sink potentials" is to model land-use scenarios in a dynamic and spatially-explicitly fashion with CLUEMondo. Scenarios build on the downscaling and allocation of simulation results from the partial equilibrium market models GFPM and MAGNET. They are used to assess the impact on long-term carbon sink potentials, sustainable forest management, and other forms of land use, such as commodity-based agricultural production. Land use scenarios are simulated and evaluated for selected regions of the potential case study countries Brazil and Indonesia.
Tasks
- Performing spatially-explicit simulations and scenario analysis with CLUEMondo
- Impact assessment of simulation results using IPPC accounting approach to evaluate long-term carbon sink potentials
- Preparation of project reports and scientific publications
- Presentation of methodology and results at national and international conferences
Your professional profile
- Good to very good university degree (Univ. diploma or M.Sc.) in geoinformatics, environmental sciences, or related disciplines e.g. agriculture or forestry sciences
- PhD desirable, but not a prerequisite
- Proven experience in the application of spatially-explicit land use models such as CLUEMondo
- Strong experience in processing and analyzing geospatial data and statistical analysis, as well as the allocation and downscaling of market-driven model simulations
- Several years of experience in the use of geographic information systems such as QGIS or ArcGIS, as well as the creation of scripts with Python or R
- Good knowledge of tropical land use systems, forest management and land use change and in relation to long-term carbon sink potentials
You personal profile
- Scientific curiosity and ability of critical judgment
- Independent, goal-oriented approach of working
- Ability to present research results in an understandable way for different stakeholder groups
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work in a team, as well as independently and on one's own responsibility
