Kevin, like what the app says it does, but ..... i need educating,
i dont get what comms mechanism a (say, nexus one) android device has
available to it that this app uses in order to be able to send an sms
message from an android device where that device has no internet or
cell phone reception .... Or what comms mechanism is relied on to
receive a spot message when the android device is similarly
unconnected to internet or cell masts .... unless gps has a feedback
channel (which i havent heard of before) ....

It uses SMS. Frequently when in the boonies internet does not work
(EDGE or 3G) but you can send/receive single SMSes. When the phone
sees that it has even one bar the app will send out queued SMSes. The
SMS itself is just a short text message with a human readable
latitude, longitude and optional street address & comment.

The Spot reception is similar, because the Spot service will send
messages from their central server via SMS. Alternatively register
your android phone with http://spotretrieve.com/ to receive spot
messages from friends.
