I tested the GeoShield solution with WMS/WFS coming from my Geoserver without success (no user authentication).

·         How do you try the solution (simple wms request? Ex: « http://localhost:1979/geoserver/wms?service=WMS&version=1.1.0&request=GetMap&layers=topp:tasmania_roads&styles=&bbox=145.19754,-43.423512,148.27298000000002,-40.852802&width=512&height=427&srs=EPSG:4326&format=image/png »)?

To use GeoShield authentication you have to ask the map to GeoShield, not to GeoServer,
like this: http://address_where_geoshield_is_installed:port/geoshield/wms?service=WMS&version=1.1.0&request=GetMap&layers=topp:tasmania_roads&styles=&bbox=145.19754,-43.423512,148.27298000000002,-40.852802&width=512&height=427&srs=EPSG:4326&format=image/png

Check geoshield configuration:

1. Go to the administration interface in http://address_where_geoshield_is_installed:port/geoshield/admin/index.html
2. Enter user and password that you defined for geoshield in tomcat-users-xml (a described in the mini how to)
   
3. Once the admin interface is open click the Groups Icon, a window will open showing a table with the demo group
   
4. click the demo group and the press edit
5. There are 3 tabs, press the one named "Service permissions"
6. Here you can see where your geoserver is located, if it is different from the real address that you set, change it.

Check the tomcat's "catalina.out" log file if there are some errors.
 

·         Geoserver and GeoShield must be installed on the same port?

GeoShield and GeoServer have not to be on same port or address.
 

·         Is it possible to use Geoshield with an GeoExt/Openlayers application?

Yes, it is possible. We already have working apps with GeoExt/Openlayers application.
