It has been over a month since the last site update broke the log
import and we have not heard from Stuart - which is most unusual.
Does anyone what might be up? Hoping Stuart is a-okay..!

Today I discovered that the program website is unavailable. Does
anyone knows something about this?

I cannot refresh or import new caches today (it's still before the
major gc.com site upgrade). I just noticed that the GeoScout website
is not up either...

I can't even bring up the GC website...so maybe that's the issue?
I'm just about to head over to France...so I hope everything works for me
for the trip. I'm pondering buying a Garmin EDGE 800 for my bike
anyway...but GeoScout is so much better than anything else for caching

I am away from home at present. I've been walkabout in Australia and
unable to get a cell phone connection let alone internet. I am
heading home now so hope to get a GeoScout update out shortly. Demand
for WinMo 6 applications has fallen off sharply with the introduction
of Windows Phone 7 and the success of Apple iPhone and Google Android,
so I am unlikely to add any new features to GeoScout in its present
form.

I should point out that the only feature of GeoScout that is dependant
on the Groundspeak website is cache imports from the web. Imports are
still possible from gpx files.

Groundspeak have been promising to publish an API to allow third
parties access to their database (see
http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/1050915-api-for-3rd-party-applications
- signin to the forum first) but I have not been able to find out how
to get included in this at present. If anyone knows more about this
please let me know. This capability would remove the need to
interpret the html pages and make GeoScout more resiliant to changes
introduced by Groundspeak.

It's really great to hear from Stuart!!! Yes, I understand the pain of
parsing changing HTML pages everytime there's a change in the GC.com
web site. I'm not sure how you could get involved in beta testing,
etc... for the APIs. But it's worth contacting them if you haven't
done so already.

I've just switched to GPX, and it seems to be working fine with some
issues. Any ideas to work around these issues are appreciated.

1) Archived caches - Since archived caches are not included in GPX
file, they keep residing in the GS database forever, without even
being marked as archived.
2) Additional Waypoints - To get the additional waypoints imported and
associated with parent caches, I need to import individual GPX files
separately, which is quite painful.
3) Last Refreshed Date - GPX import doesn't update the refesh date.

As to 3), I reset Guid before GPX import, and after the import, I run
a SQL script which sets the refresh date where the Guid is set, which
seems to be a reasonable workaround for now. I guess 1) and 2) are
hard to implement for (non-individual) GPX import, though.

I know this is going to work for premium members only, but I wonder if
GS could download individual GPX file while doing web refresh instead
of parsing the raw HTML? If possible, that might be an easy
alternative to the APIs?

Let me encourage all the GS users here to vote for this enhancement
for GeoScout/Stuart. I'm not sure if it's going to help him. But it's
worth trying. Everyone has 3 votes. I'm going to probably switch to a
Droid or an iPhone when my 6-year-old WM5 device is dead. But I'll
have to have GeoScout on whichever platform I go with. Neadless to
say, GS needs to keep working on my WM5 device until then.

Hi Stuart,

It looks like the main problem is logging in, we can't sent logs to
the site either.

Regards,

Kris

Stuart

It is great to hear from you. Hope you enjoyed the trapsing about
Australia!

I had been weighing up my options - and those options were NOTHING
compared to GeoScout. I was quite prepared to use GeoScout in its
current "injured" form permanently.

I for one, do not care if you don't change GeoScout for a while. In
its current form, it works really well for me. But I'd really
appreciate it if you could maintain it in its current form.

I am with Makoto - the more support for GeoScout and Stuart we can
show on geocaching.com - the better.

Also like Makoto, I am prepared to change platforms to follow
GeoScout. I use Mio P550's with WM5 and they work really well for me
at the moment.

The new version (3.0) is available for download, the upgrade is
payable for all registries before june 2010. Paying seems to have some
trouble, but I'm sure Stuart will solve that soon :)

Great work Stuart,

Kris

The option to purchase the upgrade should now be working.
