It's really great to hear from Stuart!!! Yes, I understand the pain of
parsing changing HTML pages everytime there's a change in the GC.com
web site. I'm not sure how you could get involved in beta testing,
etc... for the APIs. But it's worth contacting them if you haven't
done so already.
I've just switched to GPX, and it seems to be working fine with some
issues. Any ideas to work around these issues are appreciated.
1) Archived caches - Since archived caches are not included in GPX
file, they keep residing in the GS database forever, without even
being marked as archived.
2) Additional Waypoints - To get the additional waypoints imported and
associated with parent caches, I need to import individual GPX files
separately, which is quite painful.
3) Last Refreshed Date - GPX import doesn't update the refesh date.
As to 3), I reset Guid before GPX import, and after the import, I run
a SQL script which sets the refresh date where the Guid is set, which
seems to be a reasonable workaround for now. I guess 1) and 2) are
hard to implement for (non-individual) GPX import, though.
I know this is going to work for premium members only, but I wonder if
GS could download individual GPX file while doing web refresh instead
of parsing the raw HTML? If possible, that might be an easy
alternative to the APIs?
