Greetings Everyone!
I hope you all had a great summer. I'm writing to tell you where
things are at with our efforts to get a bus system here in Georgetown
and Sun City. I'm also asking for volunteers to help with some areas
that will move us forward.
Where we are now
At the last City Council Meeting to have the bus on the agenda (March
10th), the Council voted to seek funding for a bus system through
CARTS. Unfortunately, stimulus money available for Public Transit is
for capital expenses only (for example: buses and shelters) not for
operating expenses (for example: driver salaries, bus maintenance.)
Since it's the operating expenses that the City Council take issue
with, this doesn't help much.
At this point most City Council members still believe that a bus
system would cost too much and no one would ride it.
What we can do
Here are some things we can do towards convincing City Council to make
a bus system a priority. Please respond to this email or call me if
you can help with any of these action items:
* Organize people to speak at City Council Meetings this fall just
before the budgeting process begins for 2010.
* Speak with social service organizations in Georgetown to assess
transportation needs that are not being met.
* Get a petition started of Georgetown and Sun City residents who say
they would ride the bus if it was an option.
* Brainstorm other ideas to make the case and put the pressure on.
If you have the time and inclination to help, please respond to this
email.
Thanks for everything you've all done so far!
