Hello 1st years!,

Its getting just about that time where some of you are figuring out
how to spend your summer, even though its only about 8 weeks :(. I
just wanted to let you guys know that if you are interested in doing
surgical research, to check out the information below. I believe this
info has been available for our research requirement, but I figured
some could use the reminder. The information has not been updated in a
while, but it was given to us this semester, so I assume its up to
date. If you have any questions let me know and I will direct them to
the right person.

Thanks and keep chugging along!,

Diego

SIG Research Opportunities
Updated - October 14, 2007

The following is a list of physicians and nurses who have ongoing
surgical projects and are looking for student involvement. Please
contact them directly if you are interested!

Dr. Chahine
Chief, Department of Surgery
Aa...@georgetown.edu
I am focused on educational research. Two ongoing projects are the
analysis of a mentoring program in a surgical residency and the
application of the ACGME competencies in active training.

Dr. Deaton
Chief, Endovascular Surgery and Associate Professor
Dh...@georgetown.edu
Most of my current research is in clinical trials. They are as
follows.
1. Phase I FDA clinical trial of Aptus endovascular graft - This is a
new device and new fixation system for endovascular aortic grafts. We
are one of five clinical centers in U.S. and the lead center with most
cases and first U.S. case.
2. Phase I FDA clinical trial of Anaconda endovascular graft - A
endovascular aortic graft trial. We've implanted about 7 of these
grafts over last 2 years.
3. Phase I FDA trial of TriVascular graft - This trial is now
discontinued but we continue to follow the patients we implanted.
4. M2S CT angiography analysis of carotid disease - This preliminary
study hopes to define risk factors for endovascular therapy of carotid
lesions.

Dr. Neville
Chief, Associate Professor, Department of Surgery
Nevi...@georgetown.edu
1. Propaten vascular grafts for limb salvage
2. Distal vein patch with fistula bypass for limb salvage
3. Graft hemodynamics with MRV imaging
4. Neuropeptide Y and atherosclerosis. Primary investigator: Dr. Zofia
Zukofska
5. Carotid imaging with CT angiography and MMS technology
6. Wound healing analysis - endovascular vs open bypass techniques
7. Revascularization of patients with chronic renal failure
8. Catheter-based atherectomy in the treatment of PAD

Dr. Laredo
Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery
Jx...@gunet.georgetown.edu
My research involves investigating mechanisms of arterial intimal
hyperplasia and vascular bypass graft failure using in-vivo animal
models. In addition, I am also involved in evaluating treatment
outcomes in patients with symptomatic lower extremity venous disease.

Dr. Evans
Chairman, Department of Surgery
Seva...@georgetown.edu
Our two areas of research interest have fallen to understanding the
clinical manifestations and aspects of laparoscopic anti-reflux
surgery, looking specifically at outcomes, risks, and national trends
in the management of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease. All of
this research is clinically based. The second area of research
focuses on basic science research and gastrointestinal stem cell work
and the role of stem cells in gastric adenocarcinoma. This work is
based out of the laboratory of Dr. Lopa Mishra, our Vice Chairman for
Research in the Department of Surgery.
***Looking for a very committed basic science student.

Kara Couch, NP, MS, Wound Healing Center
Adjunct Instructor, School of Nursing and Health Studies
K...@georgetown.edu
We are currently interested in any students who can help with outcomes
research in the area of limb salvage, wound care and diabetes. We are
compiling a large database now with the help of 3 med students and
will use this for multiple papers on the above topics (and others) in
the coming months. Any additional students that would like to
participate would be welcomed.

Independent Study Mentors in the Department of Surgery

The following surgeons have offered to serve as mentors for the
Independent Study curriculum requirement. Please contact them if you
are interested in learning more about their projects, or have an idea
for a project of your own. I have listed their areas of interest,
when they were provided.

1. Dr. Evangelista, Clerkship Director, Department of Surgery
Rs...@georgetown.edu

2. Dr. Johnson, Chief, Transplant Institute, Department of Surgery
John...@georgetown.edu

3. Dr. Laredo, Vascular Surgeon, Department of Vascular Surgery
Jx...@gunet.georgetown.edu

4. Dr. Matsumoto, Assistant Professor of Surgery
Cs...@gunet.georgetown.edu

5. Dr. Neville, Chief, Department of Vascular Surgery
Nevi...@gunet.georgetown.edu
 Most opportunities are in clinical research, but some are in basic
science.

6. Dr. Steinberg, Assistant Professor, Department of Plastic Surgery
Stei...@usa.net
 Areas of interest include diabetic wound healing and lower extremity
limb salvage

****If you have any questions regarding these lists, please contact
