Hi everyone,
It's shadowing time again. Feel free to come get your feet wet and observe your first surgery, or your hundredth surgery.
IF YOU HAVE PAID YOUR DUES, email me with your
preferences. I am going to have people sign up for the LAST WEEK IN
MARCH AND THE FIRST WEEK IN APRIL (so from March 24th-April 4th). Your preferences include: 1) area of surgery you want to see, 2) date
you want to go 3) time of day you want to go (this part is variable and
you will most likely have to skip a class, but for most that is not a
life-changing experience). If you don't include this information, you won't go on the list. If you don't have preference, please state that.
Surgical options are: General, Vascular, Thoracic, Ophthalmology, ENT, and Urology (hopefully- I'm having a difficult time with this one)
Please
email me by MARCH 13th.
The procedure the day of the surgery should go roughly as follows:
Basically that morning (or afternoon), just head down to the OR in
your scrubs (take the CCC elevators or stairs down- there is a button in the elevator that says
"OR"). Get off the elevators, take a right and down that hallway you will see
the patients in the pre-op area, and the nurses station. Let the nurses know
you are there to observe Dr. Whoever's case and they will tell you what
bed the patient is in. Just wait and then when the resident or medical students comes
introduce yourself. The attending surgeon should know that you are coming. If not, just explain to him/her that you are part of SIG, etc. If this is your first time in the OR, please review the proper OR etiquette and sterile technique powerpoint found on the google page.
First years good luck with your exams, second years, have fun taking the month of March off,
Paul
