As Mark Anthony once said of Caesar and may have been thinking of
George Lippard

"ANTONY

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury George Lippard, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;

A man of history needs above all to be understood in his times. Too
often we in the 20th & 21st Century read history backwards and project
as through a prism our values onto a man like George Lippard. George
Lippard never opposed Slavery, the unions he proposed were
alternatives to the "Free And accepted Masons", which he also hated.
He didn't like Catholics either, and wrote for the "know nothings' in
the Philadelphia "Spirit of the Times". Thought to be fair, George
Lippard never joined a street riot with the "Know Nothings", nor burn
down Catholic churches in Philadelphia in 1844.

Like many people of his day, he welcome the u.s. war against Mexico.
He didn't look at the reasons why Texas rebelled. He hadn't read any
of the 'abolitionist' literature about 'Slavery'. Texas rebelled
because Mexico was a Federal govt and had just abolished 'slavery' in
all its states. Texas was a Mexican State and wanted to retain
'slavery', and continued to defend 'slavery' right through the civil
war.

Abraham Lincoln was a congressman then, and Lincoln opposed the u.s.
war against Mexico, so did Henry David Thoreau. Lippard never
did ! And after that war, Lippard wrote , spoke and supported General
Zachary Taylor, who was the last President to hold Slaves while he was
in the White House. Taylor was also the last Whig Party President.

George Lippard was never a Socialist and he constantly promoted his
alternative to the Masons "The Brotherhood of the Union the last 4-5
years of his life. He was a good man, but had his dark Noir side of
his public persona, like we all do. Rest in Peace George !
