How do I set my default language to English in the site

Hi, I find that all map searches in English will show results in America. For instance I searched for Athens and it showed me Athens, GA. I would like to look at old maps of Athens, Greece. However I do not know the words of all foreign cities in their local language. I could not find settings to do this. Can anybody help me out?
