I have pieced together a script (using a variety of sources) that when
run (running in 10): clips all the data in an mxd and exports out the
attributes to excel for an AOI input. It works mostly ..... however I
have some issues, please keep in mind I am new to python. The script
works for me so far with all local sources, and even SDE layers from
the BCGW added to the MXD in 10.

I think I have narrowed down the issue.....

I run into issues if the mxd has SDE layers that were added in 9.3 to
an mxd. Or even if I copy those layers in to a new mxd in 10. Not
sure what I am missing here....

I am using the lyrFile.dataSource and for those 9.3 SDE layers (even
if I open the mxd and everything looks good: has a connection)
the .dataSource shows those layers as C:\documents and Settings \
myidir\ Application \ Data\ Esri\ArcCatalog\LRDW.sde etc.... I think
this is the issue.

I am probably missing something simple, but I just can not figure it
out. Any help would be great and please keep in mind that I am totally
a newby with python.

Thanks

I haven't investigated this but there was a problem with certain layerfiles from 9.x that had embedded credentials in them. Those layerfiles got passed around a lot and when that person's credentials changed, everyone's layers/mxds got broken.
In your mxd, could you remove the offending layers, and re-add the source directly from the BCGW using the ......._SVW layer?
