Yes, probably because the certificate is self-signed. As a free service, especially the https service which draws more CPU usage per lookup, we cannot offer a paid, trusted SSL certificate, when a self-signed one is being used without problem for others.
If you would like to contribute to geoPlugin the costs for a 1year certificate, indicating clearly in the donation it is for a certificate purchase, we will add this certificate in place of the self-signed one.
geoPlugin is a non-profit service and at the moment is running at a loss - so all donations are appreciated and will be used strictly in the manner for which they were intended (eg a certificate).
