It is a major DC problem and the time to fix is going to be
unfortunately 3-4hrs as a new APC needs to be sent in.
Very sorry for all the problems that this is going to create for
everyone - our most major outage in many many years...

Hi all,
The service is restored - downtime was 7.5hrs.

We sincerely apologise for the knock on effect our outage would have had
on your sites.

The last downtime geoplugin.net had was on 10 July, 2015. We didn't
quite make it to being 3 years 100% up :(

Hi geoPlugin support.

First of all, thank you for providing a great, free geo plugin.

About this outage – what happened? Was it just a power outage or was there something else going on?

I use the plugin to switch currencies on some websites. Usually, if the plugin is unavailable, the currencies default to USD, and the websites load as normal – tried and tested.

This didn't happen during the outage and for the entire seven hours, my server firewall went crazy.

None of my websites using the plugin would load and I had seven hours of being emailed this:

-------------------------

Suspicious process running under user phsroot

Uptime:  69 seconds

Executable:
/home/virtfs/phsroot/opt/cpanel/ea-php56/root/usr/bin/php-cgi

Command Line (often faked in exploits):
/opt/cpanel/ea-php56/root/usr/bin/php-cgi

Network connections by the process (if any):
tcp: XX.XX.XX.XX:52378 -> 178.237.36.10:80
(my IP redacted)

Memory maps by the process (if any):
55d9a659b000-55d9a6b71000 r-xp 00000000 08:05 4063339                    /home/virtfs/phsroot/opt/cpanel/ea-php56/root/usr/bin/php-cgi
55d9a6d70000-55d9a6e12000 r--p 005d5000 08:05 4063339                    /home/virtfs/phsroot/opt/cpanel/ea-php56/root/usr/bin/php-cgi
.... and so on, approx 200 lines of this type of stuff.

----------------------------------

The warnings stopped when the geoPlugin service was restored.

I cannot understand, from my side, why my server would flip out in this manner if your server was simply unreachable. I'm no server expert, maybe the answer is in what I've pasted above. I read the warning as my server is connecting to your server and then my server memory is going nuts!

Do you have any advice, clues, ideas... is this normal? Did other people experience the same sort of thing? It's so I can explain to the boss what happened to the websites Friday morning, and figure out what to change to avoid a repeat.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,
I'm really very sorry our outage caused your site to go down - Our
outages are extremely rare (last downtime was nearly 3 yrs ago), but
that said they do occur no matter the size of the company (all the big
cloud providers have more outages than we do). That said, we understand
what an offline geoplugin.net means to thousands of we sites (why we put
all hands on deck to resolve a pb asap). We also ask that our users put
in checks and balances on their site so that an unresponsive
geoplugin.net doesn't take down their site - for that, the simplest is
to include a timeout handler so that if for example geoplugin.net
doesn't reply in say 1 second, then provide a default value. Our service
generally responds in under 200 ms, but a 1 second timeout would be
prudent (that would mean we were overloaded or down)

As everyones implementation is different, I can't help you implement
this, but I hope at least the pointer helps.

Best,
Andy
