My study adds to a growing body of research that has found young people of color can bring about change when they learn to use digital tools to explore social issues and use those tools to stand up for their beliefs.

It is also important to convey that race, ethnicity, and culture can be a valuable source of pride for many people. If your family has important cultural traditions, explain them and celebrate them. Help your teens learn about and value difference and diversity so they are prepared to engage with others who may view the world differently than they do.

While instilling cultural pride is important, being realistic about the realities and consequences of racial stereotypes is another consideration. For instance, if you are a parent of a Black, Latino, Native American, or other teens who may be disproportionately targeted by the police, you may need to engage in conversations with your teen about what to do during a police encounter.

In general, girls and white boys appeared to have more knowledge of and positive attitudes and behaviors toward mental illness than boys and teens of color. However, assessing race, ethnicity and gender identities together, the study revealed that black boys exhibited less knowledge of and positive attitudes toward people with mental illness, including bipolar disorder and social anxiety disorder, than white girls, and at times compared with black girls. Similar patterns were observed for Latina girls and Latino boys, particularly regarding the David vignette (social anxiety). Finally, black boys less often believed that David could improve with treatment compared to boys of other races and ethnicities.

While most young teens of color said they were less likely to socially interact with peers exhibiting mental illness, black and Latino boys also reported greater feelings of discomfort and intention to avoid people with mental illness than white girls.

Through an innovative Brookline Center program, teens of color at Brookline High School strengthen themselves and each other through school-based mentoring groups: Brothers Towards Success (BTS) for young men and Sisters Toward Success (STS) for young women. B/STS helps students of color enrolled in Brookline through the METCO program (which brings Boston students to suburban school districts) learn to define themselves, position themselves for success, and develop resilience for high school and beyond. Teens work with mentors of color (Brookline Center and BHS staff, administrators, and high school seniors) to identify their strengths, solve problems, mobilize internal resources, navigate their school and home communities, and develop strategies to face common stress factors, including racism.

In the spring of their eighth-grade year, B/STS introduces all incoming freshman METCO students to Brookline High School. During these facilitated single-gender meetings, rising ninth graders explore their hopes, aspirations, and concerns about the transition to high school. Students meet BHS staff of color, allies, and the METCO administration, as well as current BTS/STS high school students.

Vitiligo (pronounced: (vih-tih-LY-go) is a loss of skin pigment that causes white spots or patches to appear on the skin. No one knows exactly why this happens, but it affects people of all races, many of them kids and teens.

To explain vitiligo, it helps to know a bit about how skin gets its color in the first place. Skin color is determined by cells called melanocytes. They produce a pigment called melanin, which gives skin its color and helps protect it from the sun.

Skin color is determined not by how many melanocytes someone has (we're all born with a similar amount), but rather by how active the cells are. Dark-skinned people have cells that naturally produce a lot of melanin, while light-skinned people produce much less.

Sometimes, the skin suddenly stops making melanin. At first, this might cause a small spot, called a macule, that's lighter in color than the skin around it. In time these white patches may spread and grow to cover a larger portion of the body. Sometimes these white patches spread quickly at first and then remain stable for years. Other times the spread is slower, occurring over a longer period of time.

Researchers are looking into a procedure called a melanocyte transplant. It works by removing a sample of normally pigmented skin and using it to grow new melanocytes in the lab. These can then be transplanted back into the depigmented skin to return some of the missing color.

Young people in Boston's communities of color were struggling with mental health issues before the pandemic sparked a crisis that increased the need for services, which were already in short supply. Now, community leaders say the kids who need help the most face long waits or can't find therapists or counselors.

Black and brown children, particularly ones from communities with higher rates of poverty and crime, face a distinct set of mental health challenges, according to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics. Last year, a coalition of medical leaders declared a national emergency for children and adolescent mental health resulting from the impacts of the pandemic. The crisis exacerbated poverty, housing and food insecurity, and illness and death due to COVID-19, factors that disproportionately affect young people of color, who have half as much accessto mental health services as their white counterparts.

Enamel microabrasion and carbamide peroxide-dentist supervised home applied dental bleaching are conservative methods of improving the appearance of teeth. Children and teens can benefit from these procedures. This article describes the step-by-step clinical technique of enamel microabrasion and a protocol for custom-tray-applied, home tooth-bleaching. Representative case histories are documented with photographs.

The Live Oak Youth Partnership found that local teens want to not just be seen but treated with respect and dignity. They wanted non-judgmental adults in their corner. They longed for more safe, welcoming, and culturally inclusive spaces where they could connect with peers and feel free to be their authentic selves. Parents wanted caring adult allies and mentors for their kids. Both parents and teens favored more positive activities for youth in the area. The partnership took this information on board as it considered ways to reach youth with education on building healthy relationships and avoiding domestic and intimate partner violence.

Include people with lived experience. Live Oak Youth Partnership includes two teens and two parents (in this case, both mother-daughter combos), who offer community connection and insights into the needs, wants, and challenges of the population the partnership is trying to reach.

Historically, victims of gun suicide have tended to be white, male, older, and live in rural areas. The single highest gun suicide rate for any group in our analysis was among white people in their 70s, followed by white people in their 50s. Rates among these older, white groups remained relatively stable across the 10-year period we analyzed, a stark contrast from the rates in younger people and people of color even as the latter groups made up a much smaller portion of overall deaths.

Researchers point to the general increase in youth suicides, the strain that comes with being young and a person of color, as well as disparities in the level and quality of mental health resources available as factors, in addition to changes in patterns of gun ownership.
