Brett Lee's first film-making credit came unbeknownst to him at the age of 17. The cricketer, who makes his debut as a leading man in the Indo-Australian project UnIndian, was credited as a pig handler in Babe, the Oscar-winning film directed by George Miller, best known for his Mad Max films.

In an interview with IndiaToday.in, the retired Australian fast bowler talks about his second innings as an actor and his upcoming film in which he plays Will, a teacher who falls in love with Meera, a single parent (played by Tannishtha Chatterjee). Also starring Supriya Pathak and Akash Khurana, the romantic comedy, based in Sydney, follows Will's attempts to win over Meera's parents and her daughter by adapting to 'Indian' ways. The film releases in theatres on August 19 this year.

We are really proud and pleased with what we have achieved. We believe we have got a great film that has a lot of humour, and it also has a really special message - love conquers everything, it transcends all boundaries. It doesn't matter what your skin or hair colour is or where you come from and what your beliefs are; you can't help who you fall in love with. Filmmaker Anupam Sharma has poked fun at both the cultures but it has been done tastefully. We haven't crossed a line.

Every culture is different which is great. I guess the reason I fell in love with Indian culture is because they generally look up to their parents and respect their elders. I am the same. I speak to mum and dad every single day. I always muck around and say, "I dont think I can live in the same house as mum and dad, as you guys do". The difference is that we don't generally have arranged marriages in Australia. But I am all for whatever works and arranged marriages do.

In late 1990s and early 2000s, I went to see a Bollywood film in a theatre to see what all the fuss is about. I don't remember the name but it was incredible. There was lots of singing and dancing. I didn't understand a single word. I have seen movies with Preity Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in them. UnIndian is an Australian film which has some Bollywood spice and flavour. In the film, the dancing appears in a dream sequence. Because it was in my subconscious, it made (dancing) a lot easier. I had to look awkward doing it.A poster of UnIndian

On being an actor: It's a massive gamble. Having said that, I did lots of preparation before going on screen. I have never walked on the field unprepared, always stepped in knowing I will give it my best shot. I have had other Bollywood scripts thrown at me but they weren't for me and plus I wasn't ready.

I think it was time, given where I was at, in terms of my post-cricketing career. My love and passion for India, the fact that it is an Australian film, the message in it - it ticked every box. I worked with a couple of acting coaches at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. I trained with Kevin Jackson, who has worked with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. I want to do more of this. If audiences watch the film and enjoy my character and what they see, and they want more, then, definitely, I will do more (films).

On how Indian audiences will respond to UnIndian: I think they will get the humour. We watched it in Australia where people were laughing at the right time. There is a lot of Australian humour and tongue-in-cheek stuff. I really like the way Will's character integrates and goes on this journey with his two mates - an Indian and an Australian. They are up to no good.

On the current cricketers who can become an actor: Shane Watson. He has got it. I just haven't told him yet. He has the charisma, the looks, he is a great guy. Among Indians - Virat Kohli. He is great. I love the way he plays.Published By: AtMigration Published On: Aug 2, 2016--- ENDS ---

Anupum Sharma is director and producer UnINDIAN. Mr Sharma is an actor and director with a Masters degree in films and theatre. He has been nominated as one of the 50 most influential professionals in the Australian Film Industry. In 2013 Anupum was appointed head of the recently established Australia India Film Fund.

The Australia India Film Fund is the result of creativity in screen business, to create new opportunities in the Australian film industry. UnINDIAN is the first of many such conceptions. Dev Bhai (Devendra Gupta) entrusted the lead of AIFF in my hands, to make reality his vision of creating high quality cross cultural productions. We both liked the sound of unINDIAN and based on the fact that Brett Lee was playing the lead role we agreed that this would be the first film.

We've had five red carpets in all the capital cities and the reaction and turnout has been overwhelming with the who's who of movies/films in Australia as well as Australia's cricket legends; the likes of Dennis Lillee and Adam Gilchrist supporting us. We are also proud to say UnINDIAN is showing in 68 cinema's across three major exhibitors; Events, Hoyts and Village.

We are all very proud of the outcome. I took a choice early on to not go for a dark, deep, intellectual film for festivals but opted for a frothy, light, comedy film .I stopped reading reviews after the guru of film critique in Australia, David Stratton liked the film. He described it as engaging in its cheerful celebration of community and an attractive display of multiculturalism.

Yes. We will manage the releases in India, Fiji and New Zealand. We have engaged Yellow Affairs, an international sales agent in Sweden, to manage the movie releases in 170 other countries as well as distribution on TV, Cable, Airlines and soundtrack available on ITunes.

Shane Warne played a Shane Warne impersonator on Kath & Kim. Ian Botham once went to Hollywood hoping to play James Bond. And scores of Australian cricketers have acted in commercials for beer, fast food and, in the case of Mark Taylor, airconditioners.

She plays a successful career woman, a single mother with a child whose family want her to find "a nice Indian man". Instead, she meets Will, played by Lee, who may be nice but is certainly not Indian.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson certainly has since moving from professional wrestling to acting, earning an estimated $US52 million last financial year. But many athletes have struggled trying to make it as an actor.

And the Hollywood career of one of the biggest and most marketable stars in the NBL, Shaquille O'Neal, stalled after Kazaam and Steel earned the kind of reviews he never received on court. In recent movie and TV appearances, he has mostly played Shaquille O'Neal.

In fact, playing yourself has been a popular role for the likes of Michael Jordan (Space Jam), Mike Tyson (The Hangover, Scary Movie 5) and Lance Armstrong (Dodgeball, You, Me and Dupree). Armstrong clearly had the most potential as an actor given how convincing he was playing an honest cyclist for years.

But UnIndian director Anupam Sharma believes Lee is perfect casting not just because of his marketability but because he is playing a character close to himself; a likable, good-looking, down-to-earth Australian with an interest in India.

Lee, who had acting and voice coaching before filming, says he rejected many offers for Bollywood movies over the years either because of cricket demands or the roles not feeling suitable. But when he read the script for UnIndian, he thought straight away that he could play Will.

"I could see me being that person," he says. "The whole cultural thing: looking after a young Indian guy that comes out to Australia and we become best friends. I've done that so the role fitted beautifully. I'm not playing this guy that's so different to my natural character."

With that mo he sported last summer, Mitchell Johnson could be a Bond villain staring down Daniel Craig across a poker table. But it's a pity the Hobbit series has almost finished because David Boon would have been perfect as one of the dwarves, bobbing down a river in a barrel.

\\\"Brett's character likes welcoming migrants in a genuine way,\\\" he says. \\\"He believes that when new migrants get to talk to people on the street in their language, it's better assimilation for them.\\\"
