I recently used the admin1CodesASCII.txt file from https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/admin1CodesASCII.txt to generate a list of ADM1-level locations for all countries. I’m now getting questions about some values that appear to be outdated. For example, GeoNames ID 1265206 is listed as Laccadives in the admin1Codes file, but elsewhere on GeoNames it appears as Lakshadweep, which is the modern and widely used name.

Because Laccadives is such an outdated name, I’m wondering whether something more is going on than just a delay in updating that particular file. Can anyone explain why the names differ between the admin1Codes dump and the rest of the GeoNames datasets?

Hi Mary

Thanks for pointing this out. It was a bug, the isHistoric flag was not
always correctly considered in the export of this file.
The bug has been fixed.

Best Regards

Marc
