Hello, I'm a new member in GeoName, so hello everybody.

I need some help. I'm adding some places to GeoName in order to use it
in a project in Univesity of Sevilla (Spain). I've just added
"Ayuntamiento de Sevilla" in GeoNames: http://www.geonames.org/7602725/ayuntamiento-de-sevilla.html

Now, I wanted to link this wikipedia article in the GeoName point:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayuntamiento_de_Sevilla

....and the same for every point which I will add.

How could I do it?

Thank a lot

regards

Manuel

You can add the links to wikipedia as alternate name with pseudolanguge
code 'link'. The links to the English wikipedia are enabled in the
balloon info window.

thanks!

I've already added another place: http://www.geonames.org/7602961/casa-de-pilatos.html
, and did as you told me, including 'link' and the link to wikipedia.

but i exactly wanted add this place in wikipedia layer, not in
geonames layer, in order to get as result when I do a query like
that:

http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyWikipediaJSON?lat=37.38950046666666&lng=-5.991677666666668&lang=es&maxRows=20&radius=20

that would be possible??

thanks again

The wikipedia layer is extracted directly from the wikipedia dumps. It
cannot be edited over the geonames user interface.
The extract is run periodically and it is planed to run it again before
the end of the year.

just one more question, I supose that every tag where I add a
wikipedia link will be added in wikipedia layer, right?

It is actually not even required if the coordinate template used in the
wikipedia article can be passed, but it will help the parser. One of the
problems with wikipedia is that there are no real standards, there are
tons of different ways to encode coordinates and everyday somebody
invents some new ways how to encode coordinates in wikipedia. And even
if they use a standard then they change it slightly. For instance the
'O' in the coord template can mean East (in German 'Ost') or West (in
Spanish 'Oeste').

If one enters a geographic latitude and longitude via a GPX track that equates
to the area of Beecroft and Elmhurst Avenue in North York, Toronto, Ontario, the
Joseph Sheppard Federal Building is named as the location.

However, while the street two blocks south is indeed Sheppard Avenue, the
building is the Joseph Shepard Federal Building.

The spelling difference is based on the ORIGINAL name of Joseph having only one
'p' while those naming the area and street after him used the more common
spelling of 2 'p's.

1. How do these spelling anomalies get into the database?
2. How do these get corrected, when discovered by those who use the database but
have no idea how to make corrections to it?

FWIW

Hi Bob

Toponyms included in the geonames database can easily be corrected. You
find the manual here: http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

Best Regards

Marc
