After using wget -r to download stuff, I found a zip folder alongside the dump folder, both of which contain an allCountries.zip file but with somewhat different schemas.

What is the zip folder version? Will it always be provided?

Reason I ask is zip/allCountries.zip is closer to my current needs than dump/allCountries.zip. OK to build an application around it?

zip/ is a list of worldwide postal codes, you can see the format here: http://download.geonames.org/export/zip/

dump/allCountries.zip does not contain postal codes, it's cities, states, pois, natural features, etc.

one other difference to note is that every feature in the latter file has a semi-stable "geonameid" while the zip file does not give a global unique ID to each feature (though, the combination of the countrycode & postal code should be unique)
